J.M. Barker (Hapupu) National Historic Reserve

Hapupu National Historic Reserve is 33 hectares of kopi forest which was gifted to the Crown in 1979 by Barker Brothers Ltd.

Hapupu is a "must visit" attraction with an easy ten-minute bush walk through the reserve.

Established to protect Moriori rakau momori (tree carvings), it is one of only two national historic reserves in New Zealand. This designation reflects the particular importance of Hapupu both culturally and spiritually for the Moriori of Rekohu (Chatham Islands).

The rakau momori here are among the few visible remaining signs of pre-contact Moriori culture. The carvings depict Moriori karapuna (ancestors) and symbols of the natural world, such as patiki (flounder).

Chatham Islands Wild Food & Music Festival

Held each March, the Chatham Island Wild Food and Music Festival has become very popular and is usually booked out.  Enjoy wild pig, weka and other great foods in the company of locals and visitors.  

Chatham Island Pig and Possum Hunting Competition

Held the first weekend each October, the Chatham Island Pig & Possum Hunting competition attracts much interest.  Speak with your host about joining in.

Admirals Garden

Situated on Port Hutt road, first gate on the left. Feel free drop in and wander around the gardens, gold coin donation.

During the summer season a BBQ is held at the gardens on a Sunday. You can book this with your host or with Hotel Chatham.

Searching for Fossilized Sharks Teeth at Blind Jims

Blind Jim's is a famous little bay on the western edge of Te Whanga Lagoon. On a calm day you can stroll along this quiet bay and peer into the waters edge where it is very common to find fossilized sharks teeth hidden in the sand. 

A great place to spend an afternoon, or take a packed lunch and take in the beauty of the lagoon and its surrounds.
